After the Irish War of Independence happened around 100 years ago, Northern Ireland became autonomous from the rest of the United Kingdom. While there are portions of Ireland that are a part of the UK, most locals find it very offensive to refer to Ireland as part of the British Isles. If you don’t want to ruffle any feathers, then be sure to separate Ireland from Britain in any conversation.
