Most cabs licensed and operated by the government are metered but some, owned by private companies, operate by contract. Other forms of transport, such as trikes called coco taxis are also great means to travel around the city. However, unlicensed taxis also operate under the radar and you should be wary of them. One of the most common tourist scams ran in different countries involve bogus cabs and Cuba is no exception. Technically, riding in these cabs is illegal, but because of the lower fare, tourists are tempted to take them, unaware of the risk of getting robbed.
