In Portage, Indiana, Janet Stanley was suffering from a skin condition called psoriasis so she decided to see a skin doctor. After examination, she was prescribed a medication called Psoralen (increases the skin’s ability to absorb light) and she was also advised to visit a tanning salon to reduce inflammation. The doctor explained that Janet was to stay in the tanning bed for 15 minutes because the medication was extremely powerful, but Janet was only half listening- she was just really excited about getting a tan at the tanning salon. After ingesting her medicine, she decided that she was going to stay in the tanning bed for 25 minutes, which is the same as tanning for 4 hours in the sun. When her 25 minutes were done, Janet was in the worst pain of her life. She was burning up with fever and 70% of her body was covered in second-degree burns. Within hours she was covered in blisters, which led to a deadly infection in her bloodstream known as sepsis. Her condition worsened and in 11 days, she died from her infection.
