The story of Frédéric Bourdin awed so many people so much so that director Bart Layton decided to make a documentary about him which he called “The Imposter.” No matter where in the world, authorities had something to say about the gifted imposter. The US State Department called him “exceedingly clever”, whereas a French prosecutor said he’s “an incredible illusionist whose perversity is matched only by his intelligence.” The film shares the inconceivable story of a man who lived more than half his life deceiving others, and the years he was able to get away with it. Whether it’s considered a tale of triumph, deceit, sadness, or all of the above, is really up to the viewers to decide.

Bourdin, who has become one of the world’s most infamous imposters, has become a pseudo celebrity in his own way. In fact, that’s kind of how he met his wife, Isabelle. She was a Frenchwoman, studying to be a lawyer, who had seen his story on TV. Isabelle, who had survived her own story of family abuse, says she ‘had been so moved’ by Bourdin’s search for love that she decided to look him up.
