Romanian Traditions

Romania is known for quite a number of cultural traditions. Although their lives could seem very traditional and ‘old worldly’ as compared to the rest of the modernized world, they truly value the traditions that they’ve had for centuries. And although they have also found ways to grow with the rest of the world, one portion of their culture also remains the same. One thing that hasn’t necessarily grown with the times, is how normal it is for them to have child brides in the Romanian gypsy culture.

One such particular Romanian child bride was Rifca Stanescu. She was just a young girl when she was afraid her father was going to force her into a marriage because he had promised her to the son of another village family while she was just at the innocent age of 2. But despite that, Rifca already had someone else in mind that she wanted to be with. So rather than get married to the boy her father wanted for her, she decided to elope instead.
