Despite the success Velling had with finding out this information about Lori after she assumed the identity of Turner, he was unable to determine who she was prior to her identity theft. Finally, in 2013, Velling turned to crowd sourcing to aid in his search and was surprised at the results.

The first publication of Lori’s story, which included photos, what investigators knew thus far, and some information about her past after 1988, appeared in The Seattle Times. Afterwards, the story ran in several other publications and was even published internationally.
