Permanent, Widespread Damage
Hundreds were affected by the disease, and about 7 to 10 people died. 46 people have been brought to mental hospitals and many have since been unable to live normal lives. It took months before things went back to normal, and the memory of that incident continues to haunt the village of Pont-Saint-Esprit. According to doctors and authorities, only one person was to blame: the baker.
