Kaplan is quick to counter Albarelli’s claims, saying that people who take LSD hallucinate a few hours after taking it while the French villagers started hallucinating more than a day after they ate the supposedly poisoned bread. Besides, according to Kaplan, if the villagers really had taken LSD they would not have had the digestive problems they had. And as for the LSD being put in the bread, Kaplan says that the LSD would not have survived under the extreme heat of Briand’s oven, though Albarelli is quick to counter that the LSD could have been put on the bread after baking. Indeed, the controversy of Pont-Saint-Esprit is alive then as it was now, and the debate as to what really happened, far from dying down, rages on.
