His survival instincts had kicked into high gear. He was becoming quite the survivor. Callahan explains, “I had an island ecology following me along. I named the raft Rubber Ducky, my little island. I began getting Dorado. They’re big fish, so I would eat the organs before they went bad then cut the flesh into inch squares which I strung up to dry in the sun.” He continues, “I had to work – getting up in the morning, navigating, exercising, keeping a log, fishing, doing repairs… being proactive.”

He had already survived an unbelievable number of days out at sea, when something happened that was going to make a hard situation even worse. His raft had been ripped by one of his spears while he was fishing, and he had to pump air into it every so often just to keep afloat. He says, “I was at my lowest. I broke down and gave up. But then I got scared by the thought I would be dead in a few hours; I found a way to fix the raft and it felt like the biggest victory of my life.”
