How Far Had He Traveled?

By the time that Callahan was rescued, he had been afloat in the middle of the ocean for 76 days. He had traveled 1,800 nautical miles and had miraculously survived the entire ordeal. He had reportedly lost a third of his body weight. In fact, it was also said that it would be another 6 weeks after he was rescued before he could even properly walk again.

Arriving On Marie-Galante Island

When the fishermen found him, they brought him ashore to Marie-Galante Island, which is on Guadeloupe. Callahan says, “[Marie-Galante is] a sleepy little island, not a tourist island. But once I got ashore, word got out. There was a man [there] who adopted me. We were kind of soul brothers. [He was] into CB radio, talked to a friend in Guadeloupe, who put it out on the radio. It got to my parents within a few hours.”
