Sailing Across The Atlantic

Callahan first left Newport, Rhode Island in 1981 all alone, headed towards Bermuda. Then from there, he made it to England with another friend, Chris Latchem. He joined a race from Penzance, but had no choice but to quit in Spain when his boat incurred some damage. And it would be when he continued his solo trip from the Canary Islands that things were going to go very wrong.

Leaving The Canary Islands

On January 29, 1982, he set out on a brand new journey from the Canary Islands headed to Antigua. But he couldn’t have known that while he was at sea, and late at night while he was resting, he was going to get hit by something big, and it was going to cause a huge hole to the hull of his boat.
