 “The Arduous March” is a metaphor for the famine following a state propaganda campaign in 1993, during Kim Il-sung’s time as a commander. The story behind the famine was about “fighting against thousands of enemies in 20 degrees below zero, braving through a heavy snowfall and starvation”, The Guardian described. Families even ate tree barks and rice roots to survive.
