What makes Auroville not just special, but interesting as well is the fact that it has been the melting pot of people from all walks of life. At this point, there are thousands of people living there, but only one-third of them are Indians. But because it is slowly garnering a reputation, people have come to Auroville to see if this is a place they could actually live in.

The Brains Behind It All

How did Auroville come to be? Who was the person responsible for its architecture and design? The driving force behind this utopian place is a woman the townsfolk call Mother or, as she was originally called, Mirra Alfisa. She was born to an Egyptian mother and a Turkish father. And ever since she was a little girl, she had already been considered a gifted child. In her twenties, she learned about the occult and had worked with different groups of spiritual seekers.
