As the cops searched the area with a fine-toothed comb, they found a gun and a detailed map of the plan that had been made a year and a half earlier. The men meant to do this and they wanted to be extremely careful. They also discovered a draft of the ransom note that they had meant to send the parents. In it, they saw that Fred and his cohorts wanted $2.5 million from the parents, but in reality, they wanted $5 million from the state of California. They actually tried to call the Chowchilla police to execute their plan, but when the phone lines were busy, the men had decided to take a nap first. Of course, this was when the kids had made their escape and foiled everything.
