See The Liberty Jail Church Historic Site
Former prison where the Mormon Founder Joseph Smith was jailed during the 1838 Mormon War. The site is now owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and it operates a visitor’s entrance featuring an indoor reconstruction of the jail on the original site where their founder was imprisoned. The original jail was torn down, although the walls had remained. In 1939 the LDS church purchased it, and in 1963, under the orders of Joseph Fielding Smith, the jail was partially reconstructed as part of a museum.
