Nearly a year after they sent the tree sample to the proper authorities, a plausible explanation was now at hand. Bertha Sue Dixon, Southern Forest World’s director, offered the loggers the answer to why it remained intact. “Anything that would eat dead flesh would never know he was in the tree,” claiming that the mummification process prevented the awful stench of rotting cadavers from reaching other animals.
