Kidney stones are formed when minerals lodge and accumulate inside the tiny structures of the kidneys called nephrons. At some point, these nephroliths become big enough to block the passage of urine, preventing it from reaching the bladder.

These kidney stones activate receptors found along the ureteral wall which signal the brain to empty the bladder by urging the person to pee. Since the passageway of urine is being blocked by a stone, urine can’t reach the bladder. So despite having the frequent and immediate urge to urinate, patients are only able to pass small amounts of urine at a time.
