Normal urine is usually clear and transparent, and can be colorless to amber hue. In patients with kidney stones, urine can sometimes be milky or cloudy, indicating the presence of sediments, made up of minerals, and pus, which indicates bacterial infection.

Bacterial infections of the urinary tract are common in people with kidney stones and result from the abnormal growth in numbers of otherwise harmless microorganisms found in the urine. This abnormal proliferation of bacteria in the urine is caused by the slowing down of urine flow, allowing them to stay longer within the tract instead of being passed out with the urine. In addition, blood, coming from the damaged inner linings of the kidney’s structure, serves as a food source for these bacteria, fueling their growth and reproduction.
