The Holidays Were Even Harder

Kach says that Christmas time was even worse. She iterates, “I spent four Christmas Eves in a closet and heard them opening gifts and laughing and having fun. And I would sit there and think of my family, and think of other people in the world and what they were doing at that moment.” And sadly for Kach, this would go on for over a decade. She even said, “It broke my heart. I thought of my family, wondering if they were thinking about me.”

A Woman Conflicted

Considering the time that she was left alone in the Hose household while Thomas was at work, it was surprising to most that Kach never left. She explains, “I was just so brainwashed. I feel humiliated now. Absolutely.” She says that for while in captivity, “Most of the time I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with a banana and a can of Faygo soda pop. Sometimes Tom smuggled me leftovers from his dinner.” But the worst part of her captivity was that Hose made her think that nobody cared about her but him, and sadly, she truly believed him.
