Although Tim had told his two eldest brothers about the truth of his birth and adoption, the others only found out sometime in 2003. Peggy chose to tell the rest of the family herself, wanting them to finally know the truth. And they were incredibly happy with the news. Tim would even go up to his uncle who had been in the hospital with his mom when she gave birth to him and ask, “How did you not know?” And his uncle told him that whatever doctors said in those days was basically golden. He explained, “It was the 1960s. If a man walked out of a hospital with a white coat and a stethoscope round his neck, you believed him.”

Sadly, in 2003, Peggy would be diagnosed with ‘an aggressive brain tumor,’ causing her mind to quickly deteriorate. For her children, it was painful to watch as she slowly began floundering with their names, or calling them at random times, even asking Tim when she’d call, unsure, “Are you my baby? The colored one?” Tim chose to take a year off in order to take care of his mom in her last year of life. He also promised her that he would look for his dad, just as she wanted.
