The wave of cyber attacks against the US was threatening another cold war with Russia. Popov, knowledgeable on computers and hacking, was the first of his league to defect. He called the US embassy to make arrangements for his passport. Finally, he could have a life that he’s dreamed of. Or so he thought.

Leaving home

On January 19, 2001, Popov and his FBA escort headed to the US soil via a TWA flight. He was about to leave everything behind, but in the US, he felt as if he could be a better son to his parents. He could use his expertise to make tons of money. After all, he is actually able to outsmart the hackers. Like the protagonists in the cyberpunk novels he was addicted to, he could be the next Jason Bourne in the online world.
