5. Difficulty Swallowing
A common symptom that often accompanies food poisoning is dysphagia or difficulty swallowing. This happens when the muscles of the throat and esophagus stiffen as a reaction to the toxins and bacteria found in contaminated food. Because of this, a patient may start to cough when eating or drinking, making it impossible for food and beverages to go down.
People who experience dysphagia also describe a choking sensation in their throat, usually as a result of the vomiting episodes that come with food poisoning.
