A Butterfly-Shaped Rash Across The Cheeks And Nose (Malar)

At least 30% of all lupus patients experience a rash called the malar or “butterfly” rash, which is only one of several skin disorders associated with the disease. This can occur spontaneously, or after sun exposure, and can be a sign of disease activity. Aside from its butterfly shape, which spans the width of the face, covering both cheeks and the bridge of the nose, the malar rash is identified by its color, which appears red, and texture, which is sometimes raised or scaly. The malar can be distinguished from other rashes because it doesn’t show on the nasal folds or the space under each side of the nose.
