When the disease causes an inflammation in the kidneys, it prevents them from properly removing waste from the blood or control the amount of fluids in the body. This condition is called lupus nephritis and causes an abnormal level of waste to build up in the blood, resulting to the swelling (edema) or puffiness in the feet, ankles, legs, hands, and/or eyelids, and may worsen throughout the day.

There usually is no pain associated with the kidneys’ involvement and there are very few signs that something is wrong although some may notice their ankles swelling. Abnormal urine or blood test is most often the only indication.
