The term used to describe sensitivity to the ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight is called photosensitivity and can cause rashes, fever, fatigue, joint pain and other symptoms in both cutaneous (skin) and systemic lupus patients. Although more than half of lupus patients are highly photosensitive, it can only be theorized on why they are so susceptible.

It is only suspected that the sun’s UV light causes skin cells to attract antibodies which leads to the attraction of white blood cells, which in turn attacks the skin cells, leading to inflammation.
