Unusual Loss Of Hair

Hair loss, or Alopecia, is experienced by lupus patients at some point with varying degrees. With about 45% affected, it is common enough to be called “lupus hair.” This symptom often occurs early on with lupus, and can be the first warning sign that alerts people to the disease.

Two types of hair loss are associated with lupus: discoid lupus, which results to scarring, and the other is non-scarring.

Hair loss occurs most often on the front part of the scalp or may involve other parts of the body such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair. Patients may notice that their hair is thinning, or that their hair is falling out in clumps or patches.
