A refuge down the road
Finally, he found the home of Jeff Schockling. Jeff and his family scrambled to help Scott who, at that point, was in terrible condition, pale and fidgety, of the amount of blood he lost from his injury. He asked Jeff to call for help right away. Jeff immediately called 911. After 15 minutes, help arrived.
No ranch in the county
The first to arrive at the Schockling house was Sheriff Stephen Hannum of Noble County. After Scott had explained to the sheriff how he ended up in Noble County, Hannum told him that there was no 688-acre ranch in the county that he knew of. Most of the large tracts of land in the area had already been sold to the mining companies.
