Repository Corticotropin Injection (H.P. Acthar Gel)
Acthar is an FDA-approved drug that contains a naturally occurring and highly purified hormone called ACTH or adrenocorticotropic hormone, and is used to treat conditions inluding multiple sclerosis, infantile spasms, nephrotic syndorme, and polymyositis. One way the drug is considered to work is by helping the body produce its own natural steroid hormones like cortisol. These hormones may then help the immune system by helping the body defend itself against inflammation. Side effects include stomach ulcers, acne, increased sweating, vision problems, severe depression, seizure, coughing up blood, among others.
