Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, more commonly known as DMARDs, are immunosuppressive medications used to treat autoimmune diseases by suppressing the overactive immune system. Often used with NSAIDs, this drug is used to treat the pain and swelling of the arthritis that can accompany lupus and may be used to control the disease. Though these drugs can reduce the pain and swelling and can also decrease long term damage to the joints, it may still cause harmful side effects so it is important to work closely with the doctor so new symptoms can be reported immediately, and be guided when it comes to changing or stopping the treatment.

Examples: Methotrexate (Rheumatrex), Leflunomide (Arava), hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
