“Another type of drug commonly used to treat lupus are antimalarials. Though originally intended for malaria treatment, doctors have discovered that they can also be useful for lupus, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil as one of the most common brands. As with NSAIDs, these can be used alone or in combination with other drugs and is commonly used to treat fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and inflammation of the lungs. Although there are also side effects like stomach problem and damage to the retina of the eye, which is rare, studies have found that continuous treatment with these drugs may prevent flares from recurring.

Examples: Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), Chloroquine (Aralen), Quinacrine (Atabrine)”
