Typhoon Amy a Category-5 super typhoon was initially observed as a tropical depression south of Japan. It rapidly gained strength and became a destructive force by May 2, 1971. The typhoon caused massive damage to 2,250 homes in the Federated States of Micronesia, particularly on Namonuito Atoll, forcing the Federal Management Agency to declare the islands a disaster area.
