Typhoon Nora, the 4th most intense cyclone on record, unleashed its fury on the Philippines and Taiwan in October of 1973, collectively raking up a death toll of 36 people. Known as typhoon Luming in the Philippines, the Category 5 typhoon, despite losing intensity right before brushing on the country’s coast, left 1 million residents homeless due to its high winds and floodwater. Damage to the country was at an estimated $2 million at the time. In Taiwan, the devastating typhoon also left 1,000 homes levelled and 8,000 people homeless.
