The most destructive Atlantic hurricane ever to make landfall on the United States, the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 destroyed much of Florida from the keys all the way up north to Georgia and the Carolina. The hurricane left a death toll of almost 500 individuals, both civilian and military veterans, most of whom were at the Veteran Work Camps located in the Florida keys.
