In August of 1980, a rare and very powerful Cape Verde hurricane struck the Caribbean, eastern and northern Mexico, and southern Texas in the United States. The first named storm and the first tropical cyclone of the 1980 Atlantic hurricane season was called Allen and was responsible for $1 billion in damages throughout its course. A total of 269 people perished during its onslaught.
