Amy Bishop was born on April 24, 1965, and grew up in Massachusetts. Her dad, Samuel Bishop, was also a university professor in the Art Department of Northeastern University in Boston where Amy completed her undergraduate degree. She later earned her Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University where she published a 137-page scientific thesis. In the succeeding years up to 1998, she authored and co-authored at least four scientific articles. Amy has four children with her husband James Anderson.
