One can only hope that the doctor suffered after the Holocaust. As authorities tried to track him down, he remained hidden in the shadows. He traveled to countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, and Greece where he worked odd jobs. These were mere sightings of him, but the authorities were never able to confirm where he was until his eventual death in 1979. So, how did they exactly find him decades after?

Mengele’s whereabouts were kept hidden to protect those who helped him hide. It was only when a police raided a friend’s house were they able to discover where his body was buried. As soon as the police got the exact location, they exhumed his body. In 1985, an extensive forensic analysis proved that this was indeed the Angel of Death himself. To this day, he has been denied return to Germany as his bones remain in a storage facility in Sao Paolo.
