One of the historic structures near this town is the Roman bridge built over the Miño River which was rebuilt during the Middle Ages.

When the Miño river was dammed in the 1960s by the late dictator Francisco Franco to create the Belesar reservoir, the old village of Portomarin was submerged. The ancient structures in the old Portomarin was moved brick by brick and reconstructed in the new Portomarin.
