Facial flushing or facial reddening happens when blood vessels in the face open up and can happen unpredictably or as a result of certain triggers such as cold weather, sun exposure and spicy foods. Facial flushing can also occur with emotional stress and exercise which can raise blood pressure temporarily. However, constantly high blood pressure makes one appear red in the face for extended periods, which could possibly be a sign that blood pressure is elevated.

Although flushed faces could signify an increased blood pressure, it is not directly caused by hypertension but comes as a result of other physiological reactions triggered by high blood pressure. It wouldn’t hurt to have yourself checked for hypertension should you notice this sign as a preventive measure.
