Flame-like wine jar from the sky, Phrygia, Roman Republic, 74 BCE
Plutarch, a Roman army commander, reported seeing something eerily strange when he was about to go into battle with Mithridates VI of Pontus. According to his account, “all of a sudden, the sky burst asunder, and a huge, flame-like body was seen to fall between the two armies. In shape, it was most like a wine-jar, and in color, like molten silver.” Even the opposing army reported seeing the same silvery object shaped like a wine jar.
