The original group of 10 hikers was set to make a 350-kilometer, or a bit over 200-miles, trek through the Northern Urals up to Mount Otorten. They were scheduled to leave on January 25, 1959, during one of the coldest months of the year, which would probably lead into even further colder climates as the days passed. It was also considered a Category III, or highest difficulty, trip to make.
