On January 27, they left Vizhai, and on skis, they began their hike up to Otorten. Little did they know that on the very next day, one of the hikers would end up getting lumbago, which is basically joint and muscle pain in the lower back. 21-year-old Yuri Yudin decided to turn back to Vizhai while the remaining 9 hikers would continue on their journey. Yudin couldn’t have known then, that his bout of back pain would be what kept him alive.
