John took out his canoe on March 12, 2002 and purposely went missing. Despite the efforts to find him, the only thing police recovered was his broken canoe on March 22, 10 days after he had disappeared. Less than a year later, he was declared legally dead, allowing Ann to claim his life insurance, which had roughly amounted to $700,000. The couple fled for Panama believing that they got off scot-free. But when John came back 5 years later, pretending he had lost his memory and didn’t have a clue what had happened, authorities knew otherwise. He and Ann were both forced to serve time for their crimes.

Patrick McDermott, who was Olivia Newton’s boyfriend for around 9 years, disappeared during a fishing trip that had 22 other people on it. Reports say that not a single person on that trip back in 2005 on the Freedom had seen Patrick go overboard. And yet, when he didn’t return, the Coast Guard investigated the case and eventually said that he was lost at sea. Whether he didn’t enjoy his life in the spotlight wasn’t necessarily known, but what was established was that he owed money for child support, amongst other things.
