The Octagon house was erected in 1801, and one of the more historic mansions found at the heart of the U.S. It was built for Colonel John Tayloe III, which later served as the French Embassy in 1812. It was also the residence of President Madison when he signed the Treaty of Ghent. Today, the Octagon house serves as a museum used by the American Institute of Architects. And it has also become notorious for being haunted. Witnesses heard eerie footsteps inside the house and doors that have been locked open on their own. Even some objects move without anyone touching them.

It may come as a surprise, but the White House, the seat of the country’s power, is also haunted. Erected in 1800, the White House was burned to the ground in 1812. It went through several modifications over the years. Ghostly apparitions of past presidents and employees have been reported by witnesses to have appeared there. The most often seen was the ghost of Abraham Lincoln in his room and walking along the halls.
