As mentioned before, people from New Zealand are known as Kiwis because of a bird that is native to the country, which is the same bird that also acts as the countries national symbol. The Kiwi is a small flightless bird that the indigenous people of New Zealand, known as Māori, have deep respect for the bird that they call ‘the hidden bird of Tāne, the God of the forest – or ‘te manu huna a Tāne’ in the native language.’ The Kiwi bird was also used as a symbol for the military, which is actually how it eventually became the national symbol in the first place.
