Making More Space

As time went on, Elisabeth pleaded with her father to make more space in the dungeon. After some consideration, Josef agreed, but at a horrible price for Elisabeth and her 3 children stuck with her underground. For part of the expansion, it was said that they were forced to dig the soil out themselves with their bare hands, working day to night just to make a little more space. By the time it was finished, the entire space was made up of 8 rooms, but it was still a place of captivity, maybe just a little more livable.

Josef’s Bizarre Behavior

During the times that Josef spent below with his daughter and children, he tried to be the “father” that most children had. He would watch TV with them and buy toys for them, and he would bring Liesl to another room so the kids wouldn’t see when he was abusing her.
