When the hospital staff found the strange note tucked into Kerstin’s pocket, they asked Josef about it. They couldn’t find any medical records for the now 19 –year-old Kerstin, which was highly unlikely for someone her age. She was suffering from kidney failure and was in dire need of medical attention. When Josef said that Kerstin was, in fact, the daughter of his “missing” daughter Elisabeth, the staff began to get suspicious. They informed the authorities, who then went on TV and appealed for Liesl to come forward. Luckily, Elisabeth saw it all on the tiny television in their tiny cellar.

As the days passed, Josef was asked more and more questions about Kerstin’s sudden appearance. How is it that after 19 years she finally appeared out of the blue? Why did she have such pale skin, why was she malnourished and why did her teeth look like they had never been seen by a dentist? Plus Elisabeth bugged Josef every day that Kerstin was gone, and for some unthinkable reason, he actually relinquished and let Elisabeth go with him to the hospital. On April 21, 2008, Elisabeth finally saw the light of day after being held captive for 24 years.
