If Elizabeth only knew what her father had been planning during her time away, she probably would have tried much harder to run away. After all of Liesl’s attempts at escape, Josef Fritzl decided that he was going to build an underground dungeon where he could keep her locked up and enslaved.

Evil Incarnate

Due to Josef’s engineering background, he was able to build it exactly the way he deemed fit. From the get-go, he knew just what he was going to do with his basement lair. Once he was finished, he would be able to keep his ‘beloved’ daughter Liesl inside, with zero means to escape. And he would be able to continue his endless torture and abuse without worrying that anyone would find out.
