8. Herring
Found commonly in the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans, these oily fish have been an important source of nourishment for many cultures, many of which prepare them by smoking, pickling, drying, fermenting or curing them to prolong storage life for future consumption. The fish is high in Omega-3 fatty acids but is also packed with uric acid-forming purines, a reason why patients with gout are advised to stay away from them.
