Police said that after they found remnants of Dru’s blood in his car, they knew “Dru Sjodin battled him every step of the way, and she left us unmistakable messages.” It was only Hoy who said, “The only guy they put on the stand who talked about it does not know,” trying to get jurors to bend to his defense.

It would also seem that in the hometown of Dru in North Dakota, most of the community was angered and impossibly upset over the news. Although they knew she was missing for months, no one knew until her body was found what kind of torture Dru had gone through. Dennis Weisman, who attended church with the Sjodin family at Crosslake Lutheran Church said, “A lot of them want to string him [Rodriguez] up. They say ‘Make him suffer like she’s suffered.’ “
