Elaine Li, interviewed by CNN on her tour in the Pyongyang Metro, said that one of the things she noticed was how quiet it was. “It seemed so tame—no one was saying anything… could even be described as a little lifeless”, Li added. The doors on the trains are opened and closed manually and the platform is also quite dim.

The North Korean government would not want you to see this—one example of the harsh realities outside the city where people are struggling with poverty. In an interview with Time Magazine, Chinese photographer Liu Yuan said, “It was fine taking pictures in the urban area, but not outside of the city.”
